Moving Needles: Improve Immunization Rates in PALTC

Moving Needles Resources

Moving Needles is a cooperative agreement between AMDA – The Society for Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine and the CDC. The project aims to make routine adult immunization a standard of care for post-acute and long-term care (PALTC) residents and an expectation for staff. AMDA is pleased to share the following Moving Needles resources and materials.

In-Service for PALTC Staff on the Value of Vaccines  

AMDA surveyed frontline PALTC staff to determine their professional development preferences and attitudes about vaccines. Based on survey findings, the team developed a 30-minute in-service to be delivered by a clinical supervisor, as well as a brief supervisor training. It neutrally covers the following:

  • Which vaccines are recommended for PALTC residents and staff
  • Why both residents and staff are at increased risk of illness
  • Answers to frequently asked questions

Vaccine Billing Guide

Because of the complexity of payment for Part B vs. Part D vaccines for Part A and long-term residents, AMDA developed this flowchart for how PALTC facilities can bill.

Posters for Setting and Tracking Vaccine Goals

Setting vaccination goals and tracking progress can help build momentum and normalize a culture of vaccination. These posters for residents and/or staff can be used in facilities to promote vaccination efforts. You can access them online or contact project staff for hard copies by mail.

EHR/IIS Interoperability Issues and Recommendations

Connectivity between PALTC electronic health record systems (EHRs) and public health immunization information systems (IIS) is key to ensuring residents are up to date with recommended immunizations. Several publications address challenges, recommendations, and a guide to interoperability readiness.
